Like previous years, my gaming life becomes dominated by “Road to the Show” mode. For those unfamiliar, this mode is the single player superstar mode that follows one created athlete. Once I create my rising star at the AA level, I can’t put it down. I get into the habit of saying, “one more game,” and I find myself turning off the PS3 six hours later. The default batting mode for experience players is a combination of aiming and timing your swing. If you prefer the “Pure Analog” batting system of previous years, you have that option.

I welcomed the new swing style, seeing as I detested the unnecessary difficulty of the analog system.Fielding could use some improvements. I played primarily as an outfielder.

After a ball is hit, a colored arrow appears in the direction that the ball will land. Red means the ball is far, while green means you’re close.

Unfortunately, even if an arrow is green, it doesn’t mean the ball will be caught. You may still be a few feet off the mark. That problem caused me to fumble many routine fly balls.

I would’ve liked to see some more interaction between athlete and ball club in Road to the Show. I was working my way up to the bigs, but was stuck in AAA for most of my first season. While batting.410, I thought I deserved a chance in the majors, or at least a pay raise. But I was stuck there for months, with little word from management about my future. It’s still quite addictive, but I hope this mode is expanded in future years.New in 2013, Road to the Show now has online leaderboards.

Each game yields experience points based on performance. That XP goes to an online leaderboard that can be compared to others’ Road to the Show experience. It doesn’t mean much, and doesn’t give any bonus to your character’s career, but it does add an online competition to the mode.Another addition in 2013 is the new Postseason mode. This mode is an expedited experience of the MLB postseason. The player can choose the teams to compete in the bracket, and control one or more teams of his or her choosing. This mode can provide fun for the player who wants to recreate or predict playoff scenarios as the actual baseball season approaches the playoff hunt.Like last year, “MLB 13: The Show” has cross-platform play with the PS Vita.

This is a great way to continue a franchise or Road to the Show game while away from the main gaming base. Unfortunately, the Vita version isn’t a one-to-one replica of the PS3 experience. It’s watered-down to say the least. Controls and gameplay remain the same, but graphics and sound take a hit on the Vita version.

There aren’t any replays given, and the announcers have less of an inventory of phrases. Being able to continue a career on the go is an excellent feature, but you’re going to want to save milestones like your first major league game for the PS3 version. A problem with previous versions of “The Show” was its lack of approachability for baseball novices. A new “Beginner” mode makes the gameplay easy to pick up if you don’t know your way around a baseball bat. The mode then adjusts based on your performance.

If you’re breezing through it, things will become more difficult. Inversely, it will become easier if you’re struggling. My first year of the Show was a rough one, so something like this is a great feature for newcomers.Overall, “MLB 13: The Show” retains its crown as the superior baseball experience in video games. There’s room for improvement for next year, but this will still be a major time sink for fans of the series.

The new beginner mode makes this edition a good year to give it a try for those who have been on the fence about it. It’s still a home run, but here’s hoping San Diego Studios knocks it completely out of the park next year.
